Orion Buske, PhD

Chief Executive Officer

Orion strives to empower patients, doctors, and researchers through new tools and technologies. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toronto, where he specialized in algorithms for genome analysis and #raredisease patient matchmaking. At various times, he led the technical developments of: PhenomeCentral, the Matchmaker Exchange, PatientKind, and RareConnect. He loves data, design, and gardening.

Pawel Buczkowicz, PhD

Chief Operating Officer
VP Scientific & Medical Affairs

Dr. Pawel Buczkowicz has Lean Six Sigma certification and a PhD in cancer genetics and molecular pathology from the University of Toronto. He has worked on various projects including using next generation sequencing technologies to improve therapies for high-risk childhood cancer, development and validation of clinical genetic tests, and translational research on paediatric stroke, vasculitis and brain tumours. Based on his translational research on brainstem gliomas, published in various high impact journals such as Nature Genetics, including the discovery of novel mutations in human cancers and development of clinical correlates, a new World Health Organization classification was implemented for paediatric gliomas. Dr. Buczkowicz is passionate about streamlining clinical workflows in order to improve the healthcare experience for both patient and doctor and believes smart and efficient software will revolutionize the way medicine is practiced.

Sebastian Stanisor, BASc

Technical Lead

Sebastian is passionate about working on projects that have a positive impact on people's lives. He was previously at Environment Canada where he worked on the backend system for processing weather data from all over Canada. He also loves automation and strives to reduce any repetitive and frustrating tasks that could help his teammates. He has a BASc in Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto. In his personal life he is passionate about astronomy, books, digital art and motorcycles.

Alina Gvozdik, BSc

Senior Software Developer

Alina is a software developer. Having studied biophysics prior to obtaining her BSc in Computer Science, Alina is interested in solving medical and research problems with software. Prior to joining PhenoTips, Alina worked with the PhenoTips open source team. In her free time Alina enjoys drawing, reading, mountain biking, and Muay Thai.

Karanjeet S. Waraich, MCa

Senior Software Developer

Karan is a software developer with a focus on APIs and micro-services. He earned a Masters degree in Computer Applications from Thapar University, India. Karan began his software development career with Blackrock, where he worked for 3 years. Karan is an automotive enthusiast and wears a gung-ho spirit for technology.

Michael Berger, BSc

Content Manager

Michael is a scientist, communications specialist and storyteller with a BSc in Environmental Biology from the University of Guelph and a postgraduate diploma in Environmental Visual Communication from Fleming College. As someone who is passionate about creating positive change, Michael is thrilled to be part of the PhenoTips team to help share the stories of those whose lives have been impacted by PhenoTips. During work hours, Michael writes, photographs, films, edits, and designs content for PhenoTips, and, with any available free time, performs as Big Mike the science-communicating drag king.

Sanjay Sodhi, BE, MBA

Head of Sales

Passionate about building relationships and creating value through connections, Sanjay heads Sales at PhenoTips. Sanjay started his career as an Engineer and worked for four years for Cisco in India and Holland. After quiting this job, he traveled for a year and ran a backpackers hostel for the next three. Looking for a middle way between the Cisco Engineer and the hippie backpackers hostel owner, he came to Canada for his MBA. Current passions include Leadership, mindfulness and learning new things. Out of the professional work, you can find Sanjay trying to make people laugh in his improv shows or deepening his skills in Camping, Salsa and cooking.

John Q. Miller, Bcosc

Dev/Ops Engineer

John is a computer scientist with an affinity for public-interest technology. Having experience with public-sector businesses including Toronto Star and Globe & Mail, as well as private-sector experience from startups to large enterprises, John maintains a balanced perspective on the impacts of technology, and strives to do work that improves people's lives through tech. At PhenoTips he keeps systems running and clients happy, using established DevOps practices.

Sonakshi Bhattacharya, MBA

Head of Marketing

Sonakshi is fascinated by the intersection of human behavior, product design, and business needs. With the core belief that successful businesses keep empathy at the heart of traditional business setups, Sonakshi comes with Masters in Business from the University of Toronto, with a Major in Business design. Sonakshi worked in a digital advertising start-up for 7 years and focused on developing their market and client base in the United States. Fun fact: she is a closet compulsive doodler. When not thinking about life, Sonakshi is usually drawing comics about life. She is also a lover of all dogs and tea cakes.

Namratha Prasad, MBA

Quality Assurance Engineer

Namratha is passionate about software testing and works towards making PhenoTips’ tools bug free and easy to use. She has a Computer Science Engineering degree and over 7 years experience in quality assurance, having previously worked for Oracle, Silicon Valley Bank. Namratha is excited to be working everyday to empower PhenoTips’ users with an intuitive user interface for genetic medicine. In her free time, she enjoys watching Cricket, Formula1, Bollywood movies, and Hollywood crime thrillers.

Erica Peacock, MSc, CGC

Genetics Workflow Consultant

Erica is an advocate for increasing patient access to genetic services and reducing administrative burden for healthcare providers. She holds an MSc in Genetic Counselling from the University of British Columbia, and she is certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Before training as a genetic counsellor, she worked in clinical research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Women’s College Hospital. As a part of the Customer Success team at PhenoTips, she is committed to working with organizations in understanding their unique needs and to streamline their workflows. Erica enjoys spending time in nature, cooking and yoga in her downtime.

Joel John, MBA

Solution Architect

Joel ensures pre-sales solutions become go-live realities by establishing repeatable processes and providing customers a map to successful implementations. Prior to PhenoTips, Joel implemented SaaS solutions in the human capital management space for 6 years. Desiring to solve business problems, he completed his MBA at the Rotman School of Management to sharpen his business acumen and communication skills. In his leisure, Joel enjoys spending time with his wife and young daughter, reading and making music.

Terry Bettencourt, BA

Head Of Human Resources

Terry brings his dynamic and passionate HR Leadership style to PhenoTips as the Head of Human Resources. He has over 15 years of extensive experience in Human Resources built at companies such as Xerox Canada Inc, and Uni-Select. Terry has proven successful in creating cultures of collaboration and implementing change to achieve workforce excellence. He believes that HR is a powerful partner to the business and looks for ways every day to strengthen this relationship. Terry possesses experience in several aspects of Human Resources including recruitment, employee training, leadership development, merger and acquisitions, HR consulting, benefits, and payroll. He has a track record of coaching in the areas of transformational leadership, team communication, team building, and change management. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology as well as HR and Lean Six Sigma certifications. In his free time Terry enjoys spending time with his family, enjoying the outdoors at the family cottage, and exploring the world through travel.

Charles Keenan, MHI

Interoperability Specialist

Charles is dedicated to building health technology products that easily share information among systems and providers. He believes this capability will help clinicians realize unprecedented health outcomes in our digital world. Charles holds degrees in Life Sciences and Health Informatics. Outside of working hours, Charles likes to read, stay active, and try new foods.

Chris Jiang, BSc

Front-end Developer

Chris is a Web Developer with a BCs in Math and Computer Science. With a background in UI/UX & Product Design, he hopes to make complex systems intuitive and easier for everyone to use. Chris has previously worked for AMEX, Upverter, LCBO, and has most recently been involved in a personal project, Desserts App. He spends most of his time obsessing over new technology and gadgets, jamming out to R&B music, and caring for his wiener dog.

Claire Haines, BA

Account Executive

Claire comes from a strong sales and marketing background and found PhenoTips while searching for a company that would make a meaningful impact on the world. As a lifelong athlete, Claire has a deep appreciation for the healthcare world and values the opportunity to sell a product that will lead to positive outcomes for physicians and patients. In her spare time, Claire trains and competes in Ironman triathlon and is a passionate and engaged community volunteer for several causes close to her heart.

Alice Levandovsky, BA

Inflow Customer Account Specialist

Alice comes from a customer service-oriented background, having held positions in a variety of fields such as surgical dentistry, optometry, and financial tech. She loves tackling complex problems both in and outside of the workplace. From a young age, she has endeavoured to understand the world around her at the deepest possible level, and this led her to pursue a degree in Philosophy at the University of Toronto. Her main professional objective is to optimize workflow processes and make life easier for colleagues and clients alike. In her idle hours, she enjoys going on adventures with her son, reading, and writing.

Anish Johnson, BTech, PGDM

DevOps Engineer

Anish is an experienced DevOps Engineer who takes pride in providing the best solutions possible. He is a graduate of Fleming College where he studied Wireless Information Networking. Originally a Linux System Administrator, Anish switched to DevOps during his tenure at Value Labs. In addition, he worked with Rminds Technology before joining PhenoTips. Being a natural athlete, he enjoys playing soccer and cricket and used to play professionally.

Joon Seo An, BSc

Front-End Developer

Joon is a Front-End Developer with a passion for building applications that interact with markets, clients, and customers so that he can apply their advice, feedback, and concerns. He believes that innovative products are always created through communication with the market and aims to harness front end development to improve this communication, ultimately inspiring product revolution. Following his studies in International Commerce in Sangmyung University in South Korea, Joon worked for Samsung in a strategic marketing for over 13 years. In joining PhenoTips, he takes a step to realize his dream of using his experiences and engineering talent to protect people from diseases and help them live healthier lives. In his spare time, Joon enjoys jogging and aims to do a triathlone someday in a beautiful Canadian natural environment.
